Church for all senses

There is much to appeal to the eyes and ears in St. Nikolai's, but the church offers something for all our senses: carefully crafted services, liturgical and musical celebrations, exhibitions, concerts with the highly-acclaimed choir at St. Nikolai, as well as a variety of spiritual services, including prayers for peace during international political crises, weekly meditation and Gregorian chant evening prayer. The fragrances and smells at St. Nikolai change over the year with the weather and the season: spruce-needles of the Advent wreath and Christmas trees in winter, the fruit of the Thanksgiving service, candles, or incense during Advent vespers.

The invitation to Holy Communion is »Taste and see that the Lord is good« - that's what you can experience in this church. Let your hands run over the uneven medieval bricks of the 2 m wide pillars. Walk barefoot on the flagstones and feel the polished relief of the old memorial flags. Also learn about arts and styles of previous centuries: each period, with its own ideas of faith and piety, has left its mark on the church: admire the altar, made of turned wooden pillars designed to look like marble; note the memorial slab »de Zule« at the east end of the south nave (1341, from the preceding church), which was altered for new burials in AD 1590 and 1730; also consider the 1570 pulpit or the 2001 votive candle stand (Guide 16). On our »night of choirs«, arranged every other year on an early summer evening, the church is filled with song and the choirs of the region are joined by hundreds of visitors.
